Curbing Global Warming

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the primary greenhouse gas released in the course of our corporate activities, so we concentrate on reducing energy consumption, which equates to directly reducing CO2 emission volumes.

Results of Reducing CO2 Emissions

In FY2010, the Group's overall CO2 emission volumes increased from FY2009's 334 kilotons to 339 kilotons: falling from 159 kilotons to 157 kilotons at domestic sites but rising from 175 kilotons to 182 kilotons at overseas sites. Production increased but CO2 emission volumes remained about the same as in FY2009. The cost per unit of net sales figure decreased by about 6% from FY2009's 1.71 to FY2010's 1.61. (See G1.)
Domestically, the adjusted cost per unit of net sales figure fell to 0.36 from FY2009's 0.42. (See G2.) The biggest share of our energy consumption was electricity, at 92%. (See G3.)
We continue to work on reviewing the production processes especially for our major products in order to make them even more efficient, and thus reduce total CO2 emissions.

Note: CO2 emissions are calculated by multiplying energy usage by a CO2 conversion factor. As the CO2 conversion factor for FY2010 has not been disclosed yet at the time of preparing this report, the factor used in FY2009 was applied.
Note: We have reviewed CO2 conversion factors and corrected CO2 emissions for FY2009. Subsequently, the cost per unit for FY2009 was also corrected.
