Appropriate Management of Chemical Substances

To ward off environment contamination with chemicals and adverse effects on human health, we have banned the use of forbidden substances, implemented a chemical management framework, and are working on reducing emission volumes.

Chemical Management Framework

The TAIYO YUDEN Group has adopted its own Chemical Substances Control Standards. FY2010 revisions involved changing target chemical names and adding new chemicals.
To tighten up control, we set up a chemical substances management structure specifying the persons in charge and their responsibilities.

Target Chemicals

Substances to be restricted Lead in ceramic in capacitors, lead in ceramic or glass frit, lead in high-melting point solder, dioctyltin compounds, azo dyes forming designated amines and pigments (except those for extended human contact), formaldehyde (except in woodworking products and textiles), tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDDs), ethylene glycol monoethyl ether and its acetate, ethylene glycol monomethyl ether and its acetate, designated phthalic acid esters, antimony and chemical compounds containing it (plastic, paint and ink), red phosphorus, designated organic phosphorus compounds, and natural rubber.
Substances to be reduced Arsenic and chemical compounds containing it (for semiconductors, copper films, and solder applications), beryllium and chemical compounds containing it (beryllium copper, beryllium gold), greenhouse gases (HFC-43-10mee and HFC-134a), antimony and chemical compounds containing it (excluding plastic, paint and ink), xylene, cyan chemical compounds, 1,3-dichloropropene, N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), N-methylformamide (NMF), selenium and chemical compounds containing it, thiram, thiobencarb, toluene, fluorine and chemical compounds containing it (other than sulfur hexafluoride), biophenol A, REACH substances of very high concern (SVHC), nickel and chemical compounds containing it.

PRTR Law Compliance

In order to reduce the risks that chemicals impose on the environment, the TAIYO YUDEN Group report to the government the amounts of chemicals released to the environment (air, water, and soil), and waste chemicals transported and recycled under the Japanese Law for Pollutant Release and Transfer Register (PRTR). The government publishes the records and a database of these quantities making them widely available to members of the general public.

PRTR Restricted Substances

Note: Target chemical substances and their incoming amount shown refer to substances for which their incoming amount exceeds 1 ton in compliance with the PRTR Law.
Emission: This refers to the total emission into the atmosphere, water, and soil.
Amount Transferred: This refers to the amount whose disposal is outsourced to an industrial waste contractor outside the business facility concerned.
