Realizing high-speed communications with rotating/movable objects or under water

Wireless communications based on radio waves have been used in all kinds of commonplace devices such as smartphones, tablets, and gaming consoles. This communications technology, however, has some drawbacks. For example, it can't be used under water, which blocks radio wave transmission, or in locations where radio waves are prone to interfere with each other. Certification with Radio Law standards also must be obtained in individual countries. Furthermore, radio waves can propagate over a large area through walls, floors, and ceilings, which could lead to security-related problems.
TAIYO YUDEN's LED-based high-speed visible light communication is a possible solution to unusable wireless technology in various environments where high-speed communications are needed. Such technology is very effective under a variety of conditions, for example, under water, where radio waves cannot propagate; in pipes, where radio waves are prone to interfere with each other; in complex rotating mechanisms, and in high-noise environments or locations where radio waves interfere with each other; this technology can be used as a substitute for optical couplers in each of the above settings.
