Installations such as ATMs and electric installations are equipped with increasing numbers of circuit boards and electric switchboards. Communications between circuit boards are carried out through cables. Due to the increased number of cables together with the number of boards installed, interconnection and maintenance have become substantial burdens. Under current circumstances, however, the use of radio waves is difficult from the perspective of interference and information leakage. TAIYO YUDEN's visible light communication allows wireless communications between boards while reducing the risk of interference and information leakage.

In addition, visible light communication is a very effective alternate method for wired data communications at the movable parts of assembly robots in factories, where radio wave communications can be disabled due to the high-noise environment or can be difficult due to radio wave interference, as well as for high-speed communications under water, where radio waves are unable to propagate.

Underwater communication

Radio waves cannot propagate under water. Therefore, sound wave communication has primarily been used for underwater communications up until now. Use of high-speed underwater communications equipment based on visible light, which was jointly developed by TAIYO YUDEN and Toyo Electric Corporation, can realize a communication speed of up to 50 Mbps under water with general-purpose blue LEDs that have a low attenuation factor, allowing the establishment of real-time communications of high-definition video data even in this environment.
This technology is especially suitable for applications such as underwater shooting by broadcasting stations, ocean development, and offshore exploration, in which high-definition video data is transmitted in real time.
