It has been about 40 to 50 years since the roads, tunnels, bridges, and buildings were built throughout Japan in the high-growth era. Under this situation, safety has been called into question in recent years because serious accidents such as a collapse of a tunnel occurred. Inspections to check the safety, however, require human costs, thus making labor savings and reduced costs of such inspections indispensable.
TAIYO YUDEN is currently proposing the use of wireless sensor networks as the solution to this problem. A wireless sensor network can be used as a tool for keeping track of the degradation stage of buildings for diagnosis by attaching sensor terminals to measure distortion and vibration on pillars and steel frames and analyzing data collected from those terminals.

This section introduces bridge monitoring using a wireless sensor network as an example of infrastructure monitoring.
A possible way of use would be to keep track of the number of passing overloaded vehicles that can reduce the life of the bridge from the measured traffic volume of a bridge and the weight of vehicles. Such data can be used for determining precise maintenance timing. If a stand-alone power supply based on energy harvesting and a power storage device is set up for measurement and transmission, sensors can be installed without using a cable even at locations where no power supply is available. You will be able to collect the data on a PC or a smartphone via wireless communications or a memory card during a tour of inspection. It would be also possible to display the location information of the collected data by using the GPS function of the smartphone.
