TAIYO YUDEN has supported the history of Bluetooth® modules

Aoki: The beginning of Bluetooth® SIG was when five promoter companies decided on a short distance radio communication standard for cellular phones from the wish to "unify diverse radio communication standards". TAIYO YUDEN understood they could use their multilayer technique, high frequency technology, and high density mounting technology for Bluetooth® modules and participated as an associate. I worked on the development of Bluetooth® modules from 1999 and acquired qualification of Bluetooth® v1.0 in 2000. Furthermore in 2001 we were the first to acquire qualification of a full module compliant with Bluetooth® v1.1.
After that TAIYO YUDEN established BTQ, which became the qualifying body of Bluetooth® . Furthermore we established the first BQTF (Bluetooth® Qualification Test Facility) in Asia, and played a significant role in the popularization of Bluetooth® . We have also released modules compliant with new standards and continue providing industry-leading products, such as embedded modules and modules with Radio Type approval.

Smart phone installation and power consumption reduction spurring on market expansion

Minegishi:Compared to wireless LAN the Bluetooth® transmits less amount of data and has shorter communication arrival distance. However it has the advantage of incomparably low power consumption compared to wireless LAN. By making use of this advantage we have acquired the market of short distance radio communication technology that functions in place of cable connection. The Bluetooth® market has also become stronger since it became widely used by smart phones, which became a host device, and with the development of the small-size/ low power consumption Bluetooth® low energy.
A reason for this sudden market expansion is the increase of use. Until now the main use of Bluetooth® were as peripherals of smart phones or computers such as hands-free communication of smart phones or the mouse of computers. However now it is being installed on blood pressure meters, heart rate monitors, and blood glucose monitors by actively using smart phone applications for health care or medical management. The range of use of development devices are rapidly expanding to sports, home security, home entertainment, car electronics, and various industrial devices.
Designers of various industries are showing interest in Bluetooth® low energy in order to install this small-sized as well as low power consumption technology onto their own development devices.
