Challenge for Social Issues

The SDGs, Sustainable Development Goals, were adopted at the United Nations Summit in 2015, and companies are required to implement measures globally for 17 Goals of the SDGs.

TAIYO YUDEN aims to enhance corporate value through both economic and social value, at the same time, we have been working to solve social issues through indirect impact of our business to realize global sustainability.

Challenge Through Electronic Components

People’s Safe, Secure, Comfortable, and Convenient Lives Realized by Our Electronic Components

TAIYO YUDEN has been supplying capacitors and other electronic components that have been critical to the evolution of everyday electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets, automobiles, TVs and PCs.

For example, approximately 1,300 MLCCs are used in a high-spec smartphone and approximately 10,000 MLCCs are used in electric vehicle. MLCCs are also used in industrial equipment, advanced digital equipment and information platforms that let us communicate with ease means. They contribute to realize our safe, secure, comfortable, and convenient lives.

Smart Design, Smart Process

TAIYO YUDEN aggressively promotes the development of Smart Products which can reduce environmental impact by eliminating the three M's – muda (wastefulness), mura (unevenness), and muri (overburden).

The Smart Products that we have in mind reflect environmental considerations not just when they are used, but at all stages from design through production, sales, and incorporation into the final product right up to final disposal. This means eliminating what in Japanese are called the three M's - muda (wastefulness), mura (unevenness), and muri (overburden) - over the entire life cycle of products to give them value for the customer, the local community, and our employees.

The first step is using management systems for occupational health and safety, quality, environment and other aspects as development and promotional tools to create Smart Processes that eliminate the three M's; the second, taking usage and final disposal into due consideration, reducing the environmental impact to create Smart Design. These key concepts of Smart Processes and Smart Design lie behind TAIYO YUDEN Group's approach to developing Smart Products.

Smart Design

Reducing the Environmental Impact During MLCC Production

TAIYO YUDEN is daily conducting research to make MLCCs smaller and more functional.

Compare to same capacitance (electricity storage capacity) MLCCs, 0603 and 0201, the volume is down by about 93%. By downsizing the MLCCs, we have reduced the amount of raw materials and packaging materials used, as well as the energy used for transportation.
Over the 9 years from 2011 to 2020, in terms of MLCC per unit, the average capacitance has been increased by about 1.9 times and the production energy has been reduced by about 0.7 times.

In addition, “smart.E” productivity enhancement activities focus on the visualization of production sites to help discover abnormalities early on and prevent these from occurring in the first place. Reduction of energy-loss in production and products disposition due to defection is expected to further reduce the environmental impact.

Reduction of Environmental Impact by JC Coat™

JC Coat™, developed by TAIYO YUDEN CHEMICAL TECHNOLOGY, is a multifunctional surface coating film which has functions such as suppressing adhesion of water, oil or viscous raw materials. Coating this film on printing masks, food manufacturing equipment, and industrial equipment contributes significant improvement in washability and maintainability and reduces the washing work, burdens imposed on workers. This film reduces the use of cleaning agents such as solutions and detergents, as well as greatly reduce the amount of raw materials that have been discarded due to sticking to equipment.

Use for Printing Masks

Coating on printing masks stabilizes manufacturing quality, reduces waste caused by defects such as bleeding, and reduces the amount of cleaning agent used due to reduction the number of washings.

Use for Food Manufacturing Equipment

Coating on the food production line, it prevents uneven quality caused by sticky raw materials, and greatly reduces the amount of raw material waste caused by sticking to equipment.
Moreover, reducing the sticking of raw materials makes cleaning work easier, and as a result, the downtime of line equipment can be shortened. This also leads to productivity improvement.

Challenge Through Solution Business

Flood Monitoring System

This system collects data from water level sensors, monitoring cameras, and flood sensors in a cloud server in real time, and comprehensively monitors the conditions of rivers and waterways in urban areas. Compact, lightweight, and consumes little power, so it can be installed anywhere and at low installation costs. Operating with Server configuration available to deliver data stably and reliably even in the event of a disaster, contributes to the creation of safe and secure cities.

Energy Regeneration Assist System

This Energy Regeneration Assist System have been developed as new mobility that is friendly to people and the environment. This system loaded on electrically assisted bicycle generates electricity when decelerating, such as when braking, and can recover and reuse kinetic energy.
This bicycle can run longer distances than ever before by generating electricity, reducing the worry of running out of battery in the middle of riding, and it is also possible to control over speeding using motor brakes. You can expect a safer and more secure ride than conventional electric assist bicycles.
