Environmental Aspect in Corporate Activities

Environmental Impact of Corporate Activities

TAIYO YUDEN Group primarily produces electronic components for delivery to set manufacturers. The environmental load in life cycle of these electronic components is smaller environmental impact during use than during production.

We classify biodiversity/climate change/resource utilization/atmosphere and waste/water source, rivers, and peripheral area by life cycle of the environmental load and our environmental activities.

This table summarizes the environmental impact and environmental efforts in the four phases of procurement, R&D/design/production, logistics/customers, and market (use of final products) by classification of biodiversity/climate change/resource use/air/waste/water sources, rivers, and surrounding areas. The environmental impact in the procurement phase of biodiversity is the natural impact of mining raw materials for components. The environmental impact in the R&D/design/production phase is the natural impact of setting up a factory, and the environmental efforts are setting up a factory in a dedicated area and nature conservation activities. The environmental impact in the procurement phase of climate change is direct GHG emissions and indirect GHG emissions from electricity use. The environmental impact in the R&D/design/production phase is direct GHG emissions and indirect GHG emissions from electricity use, and the environmental efforts are changing to energy with a low global warming potential, efficient electricity use, and use of renewable energy. The environmental impact in the logistics/customer phase is direct GHG emissions in transportation, and the environmental efforts are efficient transportation. The environmental impact in the market (use of final products) phase is electricity use of products, and the environmental efforts are reducing power consumption. The environmental impact in the resource utilization procurement phase is energy use and raw materials for parts and components, and the environmental initiatives are the promotion of energy saving activities and the promotion of efficient use of raw materials. The environmental impact in the research, development, design, and production phase is energy use and the use of parts and auxiliary materials, and the environmental initiatives are energy saving activities, the introduction of energy saving equipment and facilities, product miniaturization, the restriction of the use of hazardous substances, and the efficient use of parts and components. The environmental impact in the logistics and customer phase is the assembly of parts, and the environmental initiative is the proposal of small products. The environmental impact in the standby and waste procurement phase is the emission of exhaust gases and the discharge of waste, and the environmental initiatives are checking pollution prevention measures and promoting waste reduction. The environmental impact in the research, development, design, and production phase is the emission of exhaust gases and the discharge of waste, and the environmental initiatives are removing chemical substances, reducing hazardous waste, reducing waste, and reusing and recycling. The environmental impact in the market (use of final products) phase is discontinued products, and the environmental initiative is the non-use of hazardous substances. The environmental impact in the procurement phase of water sources, rivers, and surrounding areas is water use and discharge of wastewater, and the environmental initiative is checking pollution prevention measures. The environmental impacts of the research, development, design, and production phases are water usage and wastewater discharge, while the environmental initiatives are water conservation and wastewater treatment.

Material Balance

The Taiyo Yuden Group primarily produces electronic components for delivery to our customers, set manufacturers. These electronic components have a life cycle with only a small environmental impact during use. The bulk is during production, with the main environmental impact arising from energy and water consumption, emissions (including CO2) in the course of manufacture, waste and wastewater. The Taiyo Yuden Group is striving to improve our environmental impact by first identifying and analyzing in detail this environmental impact and then taking such measures as minimizing the resources applied and conserving other energy and resources by improving production processes. The Taiyo Yuden Group products are used in electrical and electronic equipment, automobiles, and other products which become waste once their product lifetime is over. We are therefore also striving to remove hazardous substances from these products.

The business activities of the Taiyo Yuden Group are carried out within the workflow of research and development/design, material procurement, production, and sales/logistics. Material procurement includes raw materials (including recycled materials), resin materials, inorganic materials, material procurement, organic solvents, etc. Production, sales/logistics include finished products (capacitors, inductors, composite devices, etc.). Input items during the production phase include energy (electricity: 949,085MWh, heavy oil: 1,431kL, diesel: 172kL, kerosene: 904kL, gasoline: 199kL, LP gas: 1,815t, city gas: 20,377,000m²) and water (tap water: 3,424,000m³, groundwater: 340,000m³). Through production, the company has reduced emissions of air (CO₂: 51,224t-CO₂e, CH: 121t-CO₂e, N₂O: 41t-CO₂e, HFCs: 304t-CO₂e, PFCs: 0t-CO₂e, SF: 0t-CO₂e, NOX: 60t, SOx: 621t) *Excluding the CO₂ equivalent of electricity. *Output includes greenhouse gas emissions of 51,690t-CO₂e, waste (total emissions 25.7kt, recycling rate 92.3%) (recycled: 23.7kt, final disposal: 2.0kt), and wastewater (tap water: 3,424,000m³, groundwater: 340,000m³).
Reasons for Changes from FY2022
In FY 2023, the amount of electricity and town gas used increased because of the increase in production.
